Hospital wristbands and patient ID bands
Identifying patients correctly is the first of the international patient safety goals, and the wristband is where it lives. The band has to stay legible from admission to discharge.
What the band does
What hospitals and clinics use wristbands for.
Patient identification
Name, UHID and date of birth written or printed on the band at admission.
Alert colours
A second band in a colour the ward recognises, for allergies, fall risk and similar alerts.
Attendant and visitor passes
One band per attendant, a different colour per ward, so security knows who belongs where.
Camps and drives
Health camps and vaccination drives use plain bands to track who has been seen.
Setting it up
Agree the colours with the wards first
- Many hospitals use one band for identification and a separate coloured band for alerts. Your own policy decides the colours.
- Choose the pen the wards will use and test it on a sample band before you order.
- Print the hospital name on every band so a band from another facility is obvious.
- Write the specification into the purchase order so every reorder matches.

Questions from hospitals and clinics
Can the nurses write on the band?
Writable with: ballpoint or permanent marker. Test your own ward pens on a sample band before ordering.
What patient ID bands do you stock?
Patient ID bands in stock are white, adult size, in Tyvek-type write-on or vinyl with a snap closure. Paediatric and neonatal sizes are not stocked at present.
