Wristband sizes: 19 mm or 25 mm, and how they should fit

Paper event wristbands come in two common widths, 19 mm (three-quarter inch) and 25 mm (one inch), and are about 245 to 255 mm long. One length fits adult and child wrists because the end overlaps. Choose 19 mm for entry and colour codes, and 25 mm when the band must carry a logo, a number and a QR code.

Which width to choose
19 mm
The standard event band. Enough room for a venue name, a word such as VIP and a serial number. Lighter on the wrist, and what most people picture when they think of a club band.
25 mm
Six more millimetres of height make a real difference to what fits: a logo and text on one line, a QR code large enough to scan comfortably, or a write-on panel for a patient’s name. Choose it when the band carries information, not only a colour.
How a band should fit
Leave a gap of about two fingers between band and wrist. Tighter cuts off comfort; looser and the band can slide over the hand. A printer manufacturer’s instructions for patient wristbands give the same two-finger margin, and add: do not fasten a band over a wound or irritated skin.
On a child, the band closes in the same way with a longer overlap. Trim the loose tail beyond the adhesive if it catches.

Questions
Is one size enough for adults and children?
Yes, for paper bands. The band is long enough for a large adult wrist, and on a small wrist the end simply overlaps further.
What size is a Tyvek wristband in inches?
Three-quarter inch or one inch wide, and about ten inches long.
Will a QR code fit on a 19 mm band?
It can, but it is small. Keep the encoded text short and test-scan a proof with the phones your staff will use, or choose 25 mm.
