Tyvek, vinyl, fabric, silicone or RFID: which wristband to buy

Updated 4 min read Paper Bands by Adalwin

For a one-day event, a paper (Tyvek-style) band is the lowest-cost way to control entry: listed in India from about ₹1.10 to ₹2.50 a band plain. For three to seven days, fabric or vinyl lasts longer. Silicone suits merchandise, not security. RFID adds scanning and cashless payment, at about ₹15 to ₹95 a band.

Paper (Tyvek-style): one day, lowest cost, tamper-evident

What people call a paper band is usually Tyvek or a similar synthetic: fine polyethylene fibres bonded into a sheet that prints like paper but resists tearing. What paper wristbands are made of explains the material.

The closure is the point. An adhesive tab bonds to the band, and on most bands small slits in the tab make it tear if someone tries to peel it off. A guest cannot take the band off and hand it to a friend outside. Suppliers rate these bands for one to two days; after about two days of sweat and water the adhesive starts to lift.

Choose paper for: club nights, single-day concerts and festivals, conferences, hospitals, waterpark day passes, races and any event where you count heads.

Vinyl: multi-day and wet

Vinyl bands close with a one-way plastic snap that has to be cut to come off. Suppliers rate them for five to fourteen days of continuous wear, and they survive swimming and rain. They cost several times a paper band, and Indian listings are sparse, so ask for a quote rather than relying on a listed price.

Choose vinyl for: multi-day resort stays, week-long camps, and waterparks where guests stay in the water all day.

Fabric and satin: the keepsake

Woven or printed fabric bands close with a plastic lock that cannot be loosened once pulled tight. They last a multi-day festival and people keep them afterwards, which makes them a branding piece as well as a pass. The weakness is water: cloth absorbs it, and colours can run with long exposure.

Choose fabric for: three-to-seven-day festivals, VIP and artist passes, and events where the band doubles as merchandise.

Silicone: merchandise, not security

A silicone band stretches over the hand, which means it also comes off over the hand and can be passed to the next person. It lasts for months and is good for awareness campaigns, giveaways and team merchandise. Do not use it to control entry.

RFID and NFC: when the band must be scanned

An RFID or NFC band carries a chip, in paper, PVC, fabric or silicone. Scanners at each gate read it, and some systems load money on it for cashless bars. Listed prices in India run from about ₹15 for a PVC band to ₹95 for a silicone watch-style band. Budget for the readers and the software as well as the bands.

If you only need to scan at the gate, a paper band printed with a QR code is often enough: printed wristbands with QR codes start at 5,000.

Choose in three questions

  1. How many days must it stay on? One or two: paper. Three to seven: fabric or vinyl. Weeks: silicone, if security does not matter.
  2. Will it get wet for hours? Yes: vinyl. Splashes and sweat: paper is fine.
  3. Must it be scanned or counted? Counted: paper with sequential numbers. Scanned at the gate: paper with a QR code. Cashless or scanned at every door: RFID.

Questions

Are Tyvek wristbands waterproof?

They resist water and sweat well enough for a day out, including rain and splashes. Over two days or more of wet wear the adhesive can start to lift. For all-day swimming, use vinyl.

Which wristband is cheapest for 10,000 people?

Paper (Tyvek-style). Plain paper bands are listed in India from about ₹1.10 a band, against ₹4.50 or more for fabric and ₹5 or more for silicone. Ask for a quote at your exact quantity.

Can a paper wristband be reused?

No. It is made to be worn once: the adhesive closure tears when removed, which is what stops it being passed on.
