VIP, backstage and zone wristbands: designing access tiers

Published 3 min read Paper Bands by Adalwin

List every area that has its own door, decide which tiers may pass each one, and give each tier one colour with its name printed on it. Keep the tiers few, keep staff and crew in colours that are never sold, and post the access grid at every door so guards check the band against the card, not their memory.

Start from the doors, not the tiers

Walk the site and list every area with its own entry: the general floor, a fan pit, the VIP lounge, backstage, production, the artists’ green room. For each door, write down who may pass. The tiers fall out of that list.

Rules that keep tiers honest

  • Few tiers. Four or five colours is what a guard can hold in mind at night, under stage lights. Past that, add a printed word, not another colour.
  • Print the tier. VIP, PIT or CREW in capitals, so a guard who forgets a colour can read it.
  • Upgrades add a band. A guest upgraded at the VIP desk keeps the first band and gets the VIP band beside it. A band cut off in a swap is a free pass for whoever finds it.
  • Staff and crew colours are never sold. Not even as a last-minute fix when a colour runs out.
  • Separate routes. India’s crowd management guide asks that VIPs move on a separate route where one exists. A tier band is what the guard on that route checks.

Tiers over several days

Tiers multiply by days: three tiers over two days is six colours, or three colours with the day printed. The day printed is easier to brief and harder to fake. The colour systems guide has a worked plan.

How many of each tier

Order each tier with its own spares. VIP and backstage numbers are small, and run out at the worst moment.

Each colour needs at least 1,000 bands per colour, so small tiers such as crew and artists can share one colour and be told apart by a printed word. Colours outside our stock: colours outside stock from 5,000 bands.

For the artwork on each tier, see the artwork guide.

Questions

How many wristband colours can one order have?

Any of our stock colours, with at least 1,000 bands per colour per colour. Stock colours are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, white, black, neon green, neon pink, neon orange and neon yellow.

How do I stop guests swapping VIP wristbands?

Staff fasten every band snugly at the VIP desk, the tier is printed on it, and an upgrade adds a band rather than swapping one. Our bands close with a self-adhesive tamper-evident tab.

Can VIP bands be a different width?

They can: a 25 mm VIP band beside a 19 mm general band is easy to tell apart. Ask for both widths in the enquiry and they are priced separately.
