Age-check wristbands for bars, clubs and events

Published 3 min read Paper Bands by Adalwin

Check ID once at the door and fasten a band in the colour that means old enough to be served. The bar then serves on sight of the band instead of asking again. The age that colour stands for is not one national number: each state sets its own drinking age, so it is the one in your excise licence.

How an age-check band works

  1. At the door, check a government photo ID with a date of birth for everyone who wants to be served.
  2. Guests old enough get the serving colour, fastened by staff. Everyone else gets the entry colour.
  3. Bar staff serve only a wrist with the serving colour on it, and never take a band’s word over their own eyes.
  4. Both colours change every night, so last week’s band is worth nothing.

The band does not replace the ID check. It records that the check happened, so it happens once, at the door, instead of at every counter or not at all.

Which age? Your state’s

Alcohol is a state subject in India. Entry 8 of the State List, in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution, gives each state the law on the production, transport, purchase and sale of liquor. So the legal drinking age differs from state to state, and in some states it differs by drink.

Lists of ages by state published online disagree with one another, because states change their rules and old tables keep being copied. Take the number from your own excise licence or your state’s excise department, and nowhere else.

Then print it. A serving band that reads 21+ or 25+ in large type, with your venue’s name, settles the question at the bar and needs no briefing.

Designing the bands

  • Two colours a night. One for served, one for entry only. More than that slows a busy bar.
  • Print the age. A 19 mm band takes the age and a short word; a 25 mm band takes the age, a logo and a number. See wristband sizes.
  • Colours that stay apart under club lights. Orange and red, or blue and purple, blur together under coloured light. See wristband colour systems.
  • Fastened by staff, snug. Our bands close with a self-adhesive tamper-evident tab, made to show any attempt to remove it, so a band slipped off for a younger friend gives itself away.

Where age checks fail

  • A whole group banded because one of them showed an ID.
  • Bands left in a pile on the bar, to be fastened later.
  • One person checking IDs and banding at the peak, and doing neither well. Split the jobs on busy lanes.
  • Guests walking back in after stepping out, with nobody looking at the band. See re-entry wristbands.
  • A serving colour that is also the staff colour.

Questions

What is the legal drinking age in India?

There is no single national age. Each state sets its own under its excise law, and the age can differ by type of drink. Check your licence conditions or your state’s excise department.

Does a wristband replace an ID check?

No. It records that ID was checked at the door, so the bar does not need to check again.

What colour should the age band be?

Any colour you use for nothing else that night, kept apart from your staff colour and changed every night.
